What Does the Bible Say About Magic?

Some people have a concern about the spirit of a magic show for a Christian event if the Bible warns against it. We don’t have to wonder about this as God tells us clearly in His Word how to know what spirit is behind a work.

1 John Chapter 2

I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.

Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.

Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.

Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.

2 John 1

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:

And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

We love him, because he first loved us.

If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?

And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.

NOTE: I have found that the more common deception that we are vulnerable to than the lies from the occult, black magic, voodoo etc. is the lie of believing that we are in God when at the same time we hate our brother.

MAGIC AND DRUG USE

A quick Google search of the Bible’s message on drug use reveals that drug use is strictly forbidden. ‘Pharmakeia’ is the Greek word for our word ‘Pharmacy’ and it condemns this practice.

​

However, many Bible-believing people, if they have an infection, go to the doctor for an antibiotic prescription and take it to the pharmacist to get that drug to help them heal. The Bible says pharmacy is strictly forbidden—what is the problem?

​

We cannot jump to conclusions. Sometimes we have to dig a little deeper to see what the Bible is saying.

​

Of course, the Bible does not condemn medicine from a doctor. It is just that in our culture we have chosen to use the same word for all drugs, both the legal/helpful and the illegal/evil.

What the Bible is referring to is the use of the evil practice of hallucinogenic drugs for the purpose of connecting to demonic spirits—not the use of medicine to heal our body.

So we have to make a distinction when someone says they are on drugs. What type?

​

In the same way, if someone says they do magic, what type?

Are they using objects to do illusions to entertain and teach about the limitations of our senses and to entertain?

Or are they calling on demonic spirits in voodoo, witchcraft, etc.?

NOTE: I have never used illegal drugs, never smoked pot, never gotten drunk, and never even smoked a cigarette.
